FADE IN. EXT. NEW YORK CITY, 1986 – COVER LETTER – DAY
Michael Broz began his film career in New York City working on classic independent films, such as Troma’s, "Toxic Avenger II" and "War." However, an opportunity would soon unfold in LA, which would enable him to make the cross-country trip out west, to Hollywood, where he landed at the legendary studios of B-movie king, Roger Corman.
Roger's movie studio, Concorde New Horizons, was a converted lumber yard that produced a dozen or so B-movies a year, where turning out movies for Roger was jokingly referred to as, “going to the Corman Film School”. It was an education and opportunity that furthered the distinguished careers of Directors the likes of Coppola, Scorsese, Howard, Demme, Bogdanovich and many others. During Michael’s tenure at New Horizons, he would work on multiple films with 4 future nominees and 3 winners of the Academy Award® for Cinematography.
For Michael, it was always about camera and he'd first AC'd on more than 30 feature films, but soon, this aspiring cinematographer would begin to DP projects for aspiring directors – music videos and short films, mostly. A few years later, however, his focus would again shift back to the east coast, this time, to be near, and help raise, his young daughter.
Back in New York, Michael would work as a graphic designer and production manager at a marketing agency in town. But when that agency folded, he would gather his accumulating skill sets - design, photography, filmmaking, storytelling, and would launch Eye Notion Visual Concepts, Inc., consulting for enterprise clients including, Clinique, Origins, Lab Series, Estée lauder, Macy’s and Condé Nast (Magazine titles: Golf Digest, Teen Vogue, Glamour, Cookie, Lucky, etc.)
This helped cement his education as a marketer and designer, but his passion for telling stories on film was beginning to take on increased urgency and it was time to begin directing his own projects.
